Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The seminar will look at Babylonian material culture through textual and archaeological sources. The focus will be on the first millennium, but we will also draw on earlier information as required. Topics include: food & food production; textiles and textile working; metal working; pottery making; woodworking & boatbuilding.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students are expected to prepare translations and commentaries for the primary texts read in class and/or prepare for the discussion of the archaeological topics assigned, participate in each class session is mandatory. Two unexcused absences are permitted. All students must give an oral presentation (15-20 minutes) on a relevant topic of their choosing. For students completing their BA within this course and for MA students, a thesis or seminar paper is required. Details will be discussed in class.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

In order to receive a passing grade for this course, students are expected to: participate actively in primary text reading and discussions; give an oral presentation on a given topic; write a final paper (BA thesis and MA only). Participation is mandatory and students are allowed three absences. All requirements must be completed in accordance with best scientific practices and the instructors' directions.

Active participation in class and short presentations.
