Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course aims to help students to an intermediate level of proficiency in Syro-Lebanese Arabic. It is designed to build on the student’s grammatical knowledge with a special emphasis on the development of their listening comprehension and speaking skills. Through this course, the students will also broaden their knowledge of the Syro-Lebanese culture and society.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The basic approach of this course will be communicative. This means that students are expected and required to actively participate in the class activities as well as to assume a large portion of the responsibility for their own progress.

1) Attendance is essential in this course. In case of absence, students will be required to review the contents of the class and to present the necessary assignments in the next session. The maximum number of absences is 3. Students who miss more than 3 classes will not be evaluated.

2) Punctuality is expected and required from students. Delays superior to 10 minutes will be considered 1/2 absence.

3) Arabic in the class. Students are expected to commit to speaking Arabic in the class and through activities.

4) Daily assignments. Students should expect homework assignments for each class. The assignment should be handed in at the beginning of every class.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

30% Participation and interest in class + homework
30% 2 midterm Assignments
40% Final Exam (Oral)

60% of the aforementioned requirements must be met for the student to complete the course successfully.

Prüfungsstoff

Grammatical content and vocabulary given during the course through selected lessons from the Lehrbuch des Syrich-Arabischen 2 as well as from additional activities (interviews, songs, movies, debates, dialogues, etc.)
