Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Content: Characterization of the linguistic "periphery." Analysis of grammatical structures of peripheral Arabic dialects with a focus on linguistic characteristics resulting from language contact and isolation from the Arab "heartland." Includes discussion of Arabic-based pidgins and creoles.
Regional focuses include: Sudan, Anatolia, the Gulf States, Iran, and Central Asia.
Objectives: Independent development and description of language contact scenarios and phenomena and discussion of peripheral characteristics of Arabic dialects, drawing on sources and relevant secondary literature.
Method: Lecturer instruction; in-class exercises; reading of specialist literature; small written tasks; independent student contributions in discussions and in the form of short presentations

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Active participation, reading of academic articles, and active participation in discussions are required for a positive grade.
30 points: Submission of the first version of the seminar paper written according to the scientific rules (10-15 pages, due date Jan 15, 2026)
40 points: Submission of a revised and final seminar paper/incorporation of my feedback (10-15 pages, due date Jan 29, 2026)
20 points: Short presentation on given topics
10 points: 5 Small tasks for 2 points each
