Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course wants to provide an introduction to the study of the Modern South Arabian languages. A selection of texts from different Modern South Arabian languages will be analysed in class and commented from a Semitic and typological comparative perspective.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The term paper can be elaborated with the support of dictionaries and further material which will be provided in class.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Active participation to classes and submission of the term paper are the minimum requirements to pass this course. Participation is mandatory, two classes can be missed.

Prüfungsstoff

Term paper (translation and linguistic analysis of a short text in a chosen Modern South Arabian variety) to be submitted after the end of the course; after the evaluation of the paper, brief in-person discussion focused on the term paper.
50% of the evaluation will depend on the term paper, 30% on the oral exam and 20% on class participation.
