Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
In this seminar, we will read and analyze selected passages from the introductory section of 11th- and 12th-century Tibetan commentaries on Indian works in various domains (Madhyamaka, epistemology, Perfection of Wisdom, monastic discipline). We will compare the structure and contents of these sections, in which authors typically explain and expand on the opening statement of the treatise being commented. Participants will gain knowledge of the early scholastic landscape and of Buddhist hermeneutic practices. The seminar will enable students who already have good knowledge of classical Tibetan to develop familiarity with the language and style of Tibetan scholastic treatises and skills in working with manuscripts in cursive script.
