Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course, the students will be introduced to the basics of the Jo nang school’s philosophical view. We will focus on excerpts from works by the foremost Jo nang masters Dol po pa Shes rab rgyal mtshan (1292–1361) and Rje btsun Tāranātha (1575–1634).
In particular, we will read selected passages from Dol po pa’s Shags ’byed bsdus pa, where the author presents his distinctive view in contrast to the positions of other masters, and from Tāranātha’s Gzhan stong snying po, which contains a concise definition of the Jo nang "emptiness of other" (gzhan stong) as the apex of the Buddhist tenet systems. Both works are written in a relatively straightforward style accessible to readers familiar with the basics of Classical Tibetan language. The students will be provided with a general introduction to the topics discussed in the reading material and, whenever necessary, with the technical philosophical terminology.
