Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Use of pure Hindi (shuddh Hindi) has always been a concern in the Hindi speaking intellectual community. However, the influence of English in the language is there since few decades and English is dominating the language of youths day by day. Furthermore, with the internet growing at an exponential rate in multilingual country India, youth Hindi is increasingly hosting English vocabulary or language alteration.
This class will discuss code switching, code mixing or language alteration in Hindi which is also known as Hinglish. It covers the comprehensive analysis of the influence of the English language on Hindi. This course aims at development of overall proficiency in the language and knowledge of youth Hindi in the media these days. We will read online blogs, essays, short stories and news reports. We will also watch and analyze some films and video recorded discourses related to this topic. The details and lesson plan of the course will be available in the eLearning platform Moodle.

The class meetings are divided into close reading, discussion and formal lecturing. It is absolutely necessary that all students engage with the weekly reading in order to participate in the class discussions. Regular participation and a sound knowledge of Hindi are strictly demanded for the course. Final examination asks students to respond to questions pertaining to the class readings. The final grade will be calculated as follows: class attendance, reading text preparation and participation 20%, final written exam 25%, home works 10%, oral discussion in the class 10%, an essay of 2, 500 words (in Hindi) on a given topic by the end of the semester 25% and an oral presentation on given topic in the class 10%.
The final grading will be done according to the following guideline: very good (100-91%), good (90-81%), satisfactory (80-66 %), adequate (65-50%), unsatisfactory (<50%).
