Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course is devoted to a section in the Pramāṇavārttika, one of the main works of the Buddhist epistemologist and logician Dharmakīrti (between mid-6th and mid-7th centuries CE). The section that will be read deals with the relationship between perceptual awareness and its object (chapter on perception, verses 194–222).

Through close readings of the verse text of the Pramāṇavārttika and selected passages from commentaries, the course pursues two goals:

- to introduce students into a topic from Indian Buddhist philosophy, that is, the critical analysis of perceptual objects in connection with the development of a form of (Yogācāra-Vijñānavāda) idealism,

- to provide a hands-on introduction to philological practices for Indian Buddhist philosophical literature, which involves the use of manuscripts and Tibetan translations

Assessment will be based on oral as well as written performance (each counting 50% towards the final grade). Students are expected to actively participate in discussion, to prepare written translations and analysis of passages read, and to present and discuss these in class.
