Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will present students with a series of lectures centred on Sino-Tibetan Buddhism during the Tangut (1032-1227), Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1664-1911) dynasties. The themes are all at the forefront and core of Sino-Tibetan Buddhist studies:
1) History through Textual Criticism: The Study of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism in the Tangut Kingdom, Yuan and Ming Dynasties
2) Blending the Sutras with Tantras: Rituals and Practices of the Heart Sutra from Kharakhoto
3) Rescuing History from Tantric Sex: Tibetan Tantric Buddhism at the Mongol Court of the Great Khans
4) The Cult of Avalokiteśvara (Chin. Guanyin观音) in Sino-Tibetan Buddhist Perspectives
5) The ‘Nanjing Miracle’ Reinterpreted: The Cult and Yogic Practices of Avalokiteśvara in Ming China
6) An Examination of the Tibetan Tantric Practices Undertaken by Emperor Qianlong (乾隆, r. 1736–1796)
