Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Course description
This is a graduate level seminar which will explore the sound system (phonological analysis) of some African languages, broadly construed: their phonetics and phonology, and the phonology-phonetics and phonology-morphology interfaces. The main focus will be on those aspects of the sound systems that are typologically unusual and of special theoretical interest. It discusses critical issues of selected African languages within theoretical approaches such as Optimality Theory, Emergent Phonology, Tier-Based approaches, Templatic Morphology and others. Some topics to be covered include tone, vowel harmony, vowel alternation, reduplication, syllable structure, stress, prosodic morphology, etc.

Potential topics

Distribution
- Patterns of sound co-occurrence (e.g., vowel co-occurrence in Kikuyu; Luganda liquids and complementary distribution, etc)
Tone
- Tonal distribution (e.g., OT analysis of tone alternation in Mende, tone polarity in Dagaare, Buli, Konni, etc)
Syllable
- Syllable and segmental processes (e.g., syllable structure analysis in Diola-Fogny, syllable formation and analysis in Fula, etc)
Harmony
- Vowel harmony (e.g., OT and Emergent Phonological analysis of ATR harmony in Dagaare, Degema, Yoruba, Dagbani, etc, rounding, height harmony
- Consonant harmony (e.g., nasal harmony in Yaka, Ikwere, etc)
Prosodic Morphology
- E.g., prosodic misalignment in Swati
- Templatic morphology
Reduplication
- E.g., Akan reduplication; reduplication in Bukusu, etc

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Eine Abschlussprüfung am Ende des Semesters (BA und MA); Zusätzlich sollen MA-Studierende (für den weiteren ECTS-Punkt) eine kurze schriftliche Ausarbeitung eines Themas abgeben.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Prerequisite: a good background in introductory and or advanced phonological analysis

Prüfungsstoff

Semesterstoff: Die Inhalte, die während des Semesters besprochen werden samt der dazu angebotenen Literatur.

Literatur

Literatur (Printwerke und audiovisuelle Medien) werden im Laufe des Semesters im begleitenden Moodlekurs bekannt gegeben.
