On November 26, 2024, our class will discuss Director Ou Ning’s film Meishi Street. After watching the film, please research the following questions online:
1. After China’s socialist revolution, when did private property ownership become possible?
2. Why are these demolition activities entirely carried out by the government?
3. Based on your understanding of the first two questions, what kind of compensation do you think is fair for the affected residents?
1. What techniques does Ou Ning use in the film to portray the character Zhang Jinli?
2. Which detailed shots are significant for character development?
3. What does Zhang Jinli’s ultimate failure mean for his future life?
4. Which parts of the film did you like or dislike, and why?Starting from the next class, please submit your proposed topics for filming. Each submission should be at least half an A4 page long. You can write in German, English, or Chinese. Thank you, everyone!

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In the first three sessions, three films will be analyzed and discussed: *My Chronicle of the Cultural Revolution* and *Summary of Crimes* (both by Xu Xing), and *Harvest* by Xu Tong. Students are required to complete the viewing of these films before the start of the course.From the fourth session (fourth week) onward, students will be assigned a project, requiring them to complete their own independently produced short film by the tenth session (tenth week). If the class size is large, students can be divided into groups to collaborate on the production. The topic will be decided through discussion with students, and basic requirements will be provided. The aim of the course is to introduce students to independent film production across different periods in China, to view and discuss Chinese independent films, and to help students gain an understanding of the artistic value, as well as the cultural, social, and economic attributes of these films. By doing so, students will deepen their understanding of China. The course will also teach filmmaking techniques, and students will work together to create short films, stimulating their imagination and creativity. After twelve sessions, students will acquire basic knowledge and skills in independent film production.
Teaching Methods
The course will include the introduction and viewing of films, with students being required to watch them independently outside of class. In class, students will bring up questions that arose during their viewing, which will be discussed and answered.
