Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
After the founding of the People's Republic China's media were mainly seen as a tool to transmit and implement official policies, only from the 1980s, in the course of the reforms, media were more and more seen as a means of information and entertainment. TV and internet have played an important role for social changes and the opening of China to the world. Party and State though try to maintain strict controls over media contents and use.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Credits will be attributed on the basis of the oral presentation within the group, home-work, active participation in the class, and the individual written papers. The criteria will be to which extend a student is capable to analyze the main aspects of the topic and to present them in a systematic and coherent form.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Students will acquire basic knowledge about China's mass media, their role in politics and social and economic changes, and on freedom of opinion and censorship. They will also analyse current examples of PRC media.
Prüfungsstoff
After an introduction to the topic, small groups are to prepare presentations on pivotal aspects, which will be analyzed and discussed by all. Each student will individually write a short paper on the subject (approx. 8.000 characters + list of consulted literature).
