Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Please direct questions concerning registration for BJ1 to the SSS/SPL, not the lecturers.

This course will provide an overview of the features and structure of the Japanese language and writing system. Reading and writing of the hiragana and katakana syllabaries will also be covered. It is designed to prepare students for Japanische Grammatik I [Japanese Grammar I] and Kommunikation auf Japanisch [Japanese Communication] later in the semester. As such, it’s a prerequisite for both these courses.

PREREQUISITES:
* proficiency in English (should obviously be comfortable with the idea of studying a foreigen language in English, C1 strongly recommended)
* about 30 h/week for self-study
* advance registration
* textbook (see below)

* being able to write hiragana and katakana is not necessary, but it does provide a head start

At the end of this course students should
* know some basic info about the Japanese language and writing system;
* be able to read and write hiragana and katakana with some fluency;
* have some familiarity with studying kanji (and have some 30-50 under their belt already);
* know a few basic Japanese words, phrases and short dialogues.

Each topic will be introduced in a short lecture, and may be followed by exercises in class and/or optional homework.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

This course uses continuous assessment (hat immanenten Prüfungscharakter), consequently active participation (both in class and outside it) does influence the grade. Three written tests, one every unit except the first one and one other, TBA, make up the bulk of it.

All tests are closed book, no materials or aids are permitted (suitable exceptions can be made on request for students with a handicap).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

* Attendance is mandatory. No-shows for the first unit will have their registration revoked immediately; missing more than 1 of the 4 remaining units results in a failing grade. Tardiness may be counted as absence at the discretion of the lecturer.
* There is a strict zero tolerance policy on cheating and plagiarism.
* More than 60 percentage points are required to pass the course (>60 → 4/D, >70 → 3/C, >80 → 2/B, >90 → 1/A), comprising active participation (7 %) and three written tests (22/32/39 %).
