Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Dynamic popular cultural exchanges within East Asia have led each nation to upgrade its national image or brand through popular culture, competing to situate its position in the region.Each nation has focused on developing strategies for its global integration, as well as to strengthen its position in the region through popular culture and their regionally popular stars. Cultural diplomacy, has become a significant policy, along with enhancing the national image and the national brand. This course shows how East Asian nations are trying to promote their popular culture to enhance their national image and national brand.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Students will be graded 30% on participation and attendance, 30% on presentation, and 40% on the final paper.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
This course aims at understanding how cultural tools can be used to implement cultural policy. Through various policies made by the government, each nation specifically uses pop culture or pop stars to enhance its image. The class mainly deals with and introduces the case of South Korea and Taiwan.
Prüfungsstoff
Every class will consist of a lecture, discussion of assigned reading, and student presentations. The class presentations will be group-oriented presentations, and the number in each group will depend on the number of students enrolled. Students will be required to read assigned readings before attending the class, and will be required to participate fully in class discussions.
