Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Colonisation manifests in various aspects of daily life, extending beyond the apparent institutional oppressions and resource exploitations. However, the dissolution of such systems of control does not necessarily accompany the departure of the colonising powers. The seminar aims to explore the concepts of colonialism and oppression, and the correspondances on the civilian level as presented in cultural productions, with a particular focus on the nuanced and particular post-colonial situations of Hong Kong and Taiwan – former colonies of the British and the Japanese respectively. The seminar features case studies drawn from a range of cultural productions, including architectural design, museums, fashion trends, culinary culture, films, comedies, literature, advertisements to comic books. The objective of this seminar is achieved by means of a comprehensive examination of the relevant literature and all kinds of textual materials (films, documentaries, archival materials, comic books, newspaper clippings and comedy shows etc.) with topics revolving around the concept and case studies.
To succeed in the course, students are required to prepare for active class discussions, presentations and a final term paper.
