Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course surveys the main topics of politics and governance in the People’s Republic of China with a particular focus on the central role and operation of the Chinese Communist Party. After the course, you are expected to obtain not only theoretical but also operational and contextual knowledge of the key components of the Chinese political and governmental system, including its power structure, elite leadership, political mobilization, ideology and issues related to local governance. The course is attuned to the current political development in China and will incorporate aktuell discussions throughout the course.

The course will be conducted in English.

Proficiency of Chinese is not required.

Course requirements and grading

1. The course will be conducted on-site through face-to-face communication, unless the change of circumstances warrants the mode of teaching to be changed. Your attendance to each class and participation in regular discussions is mandatory.
2. The course includes a number of presentation and discussion sessions. Depending on the size of the class, you will be responsible for one to two topics that you can choose from a list that will be given to you at the beginning of the course.
3. To conclude the course, you will be asked to answer some essay questions related to the course (500-1000 words) as the final exam. This exam will take place during the very last scheduled session of the course.
4. You are allowed to be absent in one class without excuse. Any more absence will result in a penalty. Missing more than three classes will result in disqualification to continue the course.
5. Grading scheme
Regular attendance accounts - 10%
Participation in class activities – 30%
Presentation – 40%
Final written exam – 20%
