150081 SE SE Research Seminar and Monitoring Class for the Master's and PhD Thesis (2011W)

In the first part, this seminar is text-based. Accordingly, in preparation of each unit, stu-dents will be asked to read and summarize related book chapters. This will create a foundation for active discussion during the seminar. Expect reading about 40 pages or more per week. After finishing part 1, students are asked to write an essay in which they discuss the contents of the readings in relation to their own work and research projects. The essays are due on (date to be decided) and must be submitted electronically before the unit begins.
In the second part, students are required to develop a research topic, a research ques-tion/hypothesis, and a draft outline of their research project including methodology. The due dates will be announced during class. The draft concept is due before the last unit of this course. A delay in submission of up to 1 week will result in downgrading by one full grade. A delay in submission of up to 2 weeks will result in downgrading by two full grades, and so forth.
To adjust the workload, we will occasionally skip single units and allot this time to the preparation of the summaries and the final term papers. Details will be announced during class.
