This seminar will not be held on a weekly basis. There will be eleven sessions (Oct 10, Oct 17, Oct 24, Oct 31, Nov 14, Nov 21, Nov 28, Dec 5, Jan 9, Jan 23, Jan 30) which will take place Fridays 09:30 to 11:30 in seminar room Ostasien (AAKH/Campus, Spitalgasse 2, Court 5). ATTENDANCE OF THE FIRST SESSION IS COMPULSORY FOR PARTICIPATION. Students who are formally registered but did not take part in the first session will be de-registered.

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course aims at communicating basic characteristics, common features and differences of four East Asian political systems based on a solid methodological and theoretical foundation. In a first step, a strong theoretical basis is created by introducing key terms and classifications as well as two theoretical approaches within the field of comparative political analysis. In a second step, main characteristics of four political systems (Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and PR China) are elaborated on in detail. We will pay close attention to historical developments as well as current issues. Special attention will be paid on transformation, patterns of democratization, elections and parties. The last session will be used for summarizing and comparing key characteristics of political systems in East Asia.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

There are four major types of assessment. Firstly, students need to write excerpts (500 words) for each reading assignment (20% of the final grade). Secondly, three essays (800 words each) need to be written (20%). Thirdly, each student needs to actively participate in discussions (20%). Lastly, students need to write a seminar thesis (8000 words +- 10%; including footnotes). The seminar thesis is an indispensable component of the seminar. It serves as a direct preparation for the MA thesis and is therefore mandatory (40%).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

In this course, students will attain basic knowledge of political system theories and methods in general as well as characteristics of the different political systems in East Asia. They learn how to apply theoretical approaches to the empirical context in East Asia. They are able to understand and explain current developments. By writing a methodologically sound seminar thesis they apply their acquired knowledge and prepare for the upcoming master thesis.

Prüfungsstoff

This is a text based seminar. Students therefore need to read articles and/or book chapters in preparation for each session (between 20 and 30 pages). There will be two main methods applied in class: Reading groups and discussions in class. They will be introduced in detail in the first session.
Moodle will be used for providing reading assignments, submitting excerpts, essays and seminar theses as well as for communication. Please note that submission of papers is only possible within a given time frame. Late submission is not possible. Papers sent via email cannot be accepted.
