Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Applying theoretical approaches from the field of comparative politics and governance research, this seminar will analyze the political Systems in East Asia. It will ask if there exists a specific Northeast, Southeast or even East Asian system. A crucial step for this endeavor is to classify the political and party systems according to ideal-typical criteria (e.g. democracy, authoritarian system, parliamentary republic ...).
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Reading and commenting six texts (600-900 words), incl. participation in class (30%); individual or group presentation (c. 20-25 minutes; 15%); and a seminar paper 8.500 words (incl. bibliography; due 30 April 2016, no extension possible; 55%).
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
The aim of this course is to draw a full picture of the political systems in East Asia in order to make sound comparisons. Therefore the analysis will focus on the three dimensions polity (institutions and norms, e.g. constitution, government, parliament, electoral system or political culture), policy (political content and governance, e.g. economic, agriculture or defense policy) and politics (formal and informal bargaining processes among actors, e.g. political parties, trade unions, lobbying groups). Students will thus gain a basic knowledge of theories and methods to analyze political systems in general and learn to apply them on the East Asian systems to point out similarities and differences.
Prüfungsstoff
This is a text based course. Accordingly, students need to read and comment up to six texts (in reading groups). Based on the review of seminal articles, we will build a common research framework in class to assess the individual political systems. Students will then apply this research design in their presentation and final assignment. The range of topics is broad, covering questions of democratization and authoritarianism, party systems, political culture, the influence of religion, the role of media or modes of governance in selected policy areas. Students can choose any East Asian country for their analysis. Certainly addressed will be China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar/Burma, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
