Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Theory: what is it, what is it good for.
Regionalism, regionalization, regional integration, multilateralism.
Asia, East Asia, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, Maritime Asia.
New EA Regionalism, result of political or economic factors?
Regionalism in smaller post-Communist countries in Southeast Asia (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam).
Multiple currencies and regional economic cooperation (the CLV example).
Institutions and their impact on regional economic cooperation.
Track 2 and EA regionalism.
Regional Environmental Cooperation in EU and ASEAN.
Comparing Asian and European Experiences.

Assignments
(1) Definitions of key terms A (due: October 18, 2011):
Collect and discuss at least three definitions each for the terms regionalism, regionalization, and regional integration. After quoting the definitions and their sources, briefly discuss these definitions and explain which one you like best, and why. You may wish to evaluate the nature of these definitions in connection to their origin or source; for example, it is possible that academics and politicians, or Japanese and Chinese, will use different definitions. Be ready to present your results during discussion in class. You may use books and articles. The latter can be articles available online. Wikipedia is NOT permitted. Your written assignment should have not less than 800 and not more than 1,200 words.

(2) Definitions of key terms B (due: October 25, 2011):
Collect and discuss at least three definitions each for the terms East Asia, Northeast Asia, and Southeast Asia. After quoting the definitions and their sources, briefly discuss these definitions and explain which one you like best, and why. Be ready to present your results during discussion in class. You may use books and articles. The latter can be articles available online. Wikipedia is NOT permitted. Your written assignment should have not less than 800 and not more than 1,200 words.

(3) Book review (due: January 10, 2012):
Select any book of your choice on East Asia and Regionalism/Regional Integra-tion/Regionalization; you may want to use our library. Be ready to present a short version of your reviews during discussion in class. In particular, for the presentations you are asked to state whether you would recommend the book, and to explain your decision. The book review should have not less than 1,000 and not more than 1,500 words. Its structure should follow these guidelines:

Grading
The course can only be completed successfully if you have submitted each of the three assignments. Failure to submit any of the assignments will result in a grade of „5“ for the complete course. For submitted assignments, the final grade will be calculated as follows:
Definition A: 26%
Definition B: 26%
Book review: 48%
Active class participation is required. Absence will affect your grade according to these rules: Absence at more than three classes: final grade is reduced by 1; absence at more than four classes: final grade is reduced by 2; and so forth.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

In this course, students will learn more about the origins and drivers of various forms of regional economic and political cooperation in East Asia. They will understand various conceptual and theoretical issues and concepts, know more about actual processes in the region, and how this relates to the European experience.

Prüfungsstoff

This is a lecture course with a few interactive elements. The workload is heavier than for a classical lecture course, but lighter than for a seminar.
