Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Contents
Based on 30 years of research of the professor on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, or North Korea), this course aims to shed light on one of the less known states of East Asia. Students learn about the origins of the system and the latest developments in North Korea as the source or object of actual or potential conflict in the East Asian region. The following areas will be covered: History and tradition; ideology and the leaders; political system; economy: basics; economic reforms; special economic zones; the leadership of Kim Jong-Un; unification. The most current events will also be considered.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Workload
Knowledge of Korean is not required. The lectures and the required readings will be in English. This is a VU, which means that interactive elements exist but are not taking center stage. We will have on-site consultation and discussion sessions in presence. In preparation of each unit, students will be asked to read related book chapters or articles. Depending on the topic of the session, these could be more analytic, or rather descriptive. Expect reading about 40 pages per week on average; the detailed required readings are listed in a separate document (schedule and assignments), and on Moodle.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Assessment
Students will be assessed through two multiple-choice tests. The tests will be held in presence. The dates will be 21.11.2022 and 30.01.2023. There will be no alternative dates for these tests.
The final grade will be calculated as the arithmetic average of the grades for the two tests. In case the average is between two grades (1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5), rounding will be done in your favor (1.5 --> 1, 2.5 --> 2 etc.). In other words, in case you miss or fail one test, you can still finish the course by passing the other test.

Prüfungsstoff

The m/c tests will be based on the readings as well as the PPTs.

Literatur

A detailed reading list for each topic will be provided on Moodle.
