First class on 05.10.2020 at 15:00 sharp; will take place EITHER in the class room if UniVie Covid regulations permit, OR otherwise via Moodle/Zoom. Make sure not to miss this class. You find Hörsaal B in Hof 2, entrance 2.10.
As we have been informed by the central authorities of the University of Vienna, the following Covid-19 safety rules apply for class attendance on campus: (1) you must be either vaccinated, recovered, or tested, aka 3G; (2) you are required to wear an FFP-2 mask at all times during class.
Please make sure to meet these requirements. If you are unable or unwilling to do so, please de-register from classes where physical presence is required.
Needless to say, this is quite a nuisance in many ways. But at the moment these measures also allow us to finally meet in person again. So let’s see this as an opportunity, not as a restriction.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Workload and Assessment
You will have to fulfill a total of four assignments. Each of them counts as a minimal require-ment (“Mindestanforderung”) and must be graded at least “4” in order to pass the course.
Assignment 1: Topic/title and research question. Provide one sentence for the title; make sure the topic fits the EcoS standards (at least two EA countries, analytical, related to a core topic of EcoS). Add one sentence for each research question (you need at least one, obvious-ly, but you can have more than one); you can also supplement your main RQ with sub-RQs, or add other RQs.
Assignment 2: Relevance of your RQ. Provide a table with a list of possible stakeholders (who will be interested in knowing the answer to your RQ) in column 1. For each stakehold-er, add column 2: Why would they be interested in knowing the answer to your RQ? In col-umn 3, provide actual arguments, not just claims. An argument can be data, or a substantial quote. In any case, you need to provide proof of your stakeholders’ assumed interest. A hy-pothetical example for the “relevance table” has been uploaded on Moodle.
Assignment 3: Structure of the literature review. Provide a table with issues derived from your RQ on which you want to explore the secondary literature. This table will then have to be turned into regular text in your MA thesis, but you should actually keep its basic structure in the form of sub-headings in your LR section. A hypothetical example for the “structure of literature review table” has been uploaded on Moodle.
Assignment 4: Literature review. Follow the structure as you created it for assignment 3. The LR needs to fulfill the criteria as discussed in the related video and during the course. In other words, it must be good and extensive enough to serve as the foundation for your ana-lytical framework.
Assignment 5: Analytical Framework. This will be the foundation for the rest of your thesis. The AF needs to fulfill the criteria as discussed in the related video and during the course. In other words, it must be good and extensive enough to serve as the foundation for the empir-ical part and the analytical part.
Late submission: Late submission is not allowed. Failure to submit on time will result in grade 5, which means you will fail the whole course.

This is the fourth semester under the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic. There are at least two things we have learned during that time: that 100% online teaching is not the best option for some courses, and that it is impossible to predict how Covid-related restrictions will de-velop, especially in the winter term. For this course, we thus follow this basic principle: It will be taught in presence as long as this is possible, and we will switch to online teaching if necessary.
What does that mean for you? (1) To participate, you need to be in Vienna. (2) It might be a good idea to get vaccinated. (3) Be prepared for online teaching, i.e. have a stable internet connection, a computer with a webcam, speakers and a microphone (or a headset), and reg-ular access to Moodle (will be granted to you automatically once you are registered for this course). Before registering for this class, make sure you meet all these requirements.
More than ever, it is important that you check for updates regularly. I will communicate with you through the messaging board on Moodle; make sure you receive emails sent to your u:net account!!!Contents
The seminar is an important step in guiding the preparation of an MA or PhD thesis in East Asian Economy and Society (EcoS). It should thus only be attended in the third or fourth semester of the MA program, or at the beginning of the PhD program. Furthermore, you must already have a topic for your thesis in mind.
The seminar leads you through the key components of the theoretical part of your thesis. Make sure to have watched + understood the related Youtube videos, available at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrjd90J0GnYYOW4QSiaeGew
The tasks to be completed during the seminar include: Presenting and defending your top-ic/title and research question; the relevance of your research question; the structure of your literature review; your literature review; your analytical framework. The seminar thus leads right into the preparation of the actual thesis.
