The course analyzes the postwar history of the Republic of Korea, as viewed through changes in the management and promotion of national heritage.
Students will acquire a better understanding of the importance of national heritage in promoting selected historical narratives and representations of nationhood and identity.
Students will grasp the plurality of messages and values that can be conveyed through national heritage, depending on the cultural, political and economic agendas of the state.Method:
The course analyzes cases of historic sites, monuments and museums that have sparked controversies in Korea. Through the analysis of such cases, students can acquire a better understanding of specific cultural and political periods in the postcolonial era.Contents:
