The Xi Jinping leadership of the CCP is preparing for two major anniversaries: the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CCP in 2021; and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the PRC in 2049. Against this background, history as an object of public discourse as well as history as an academic discipline have come under stricter control recently. It is the aim of this course to put this development into a historical context which implies that we look at recent activities in the context of the long term development of history writing in China since the beginning of the 20th century.
