Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Japan is one of the largest, most developed and dynamic economies in the world. Within an exceptionally short period of time, Japan industrialized and achieved economic prosperity in the process of opening up to the world (starting with the Meiji Restoration, 1868). With its “miraculous” recovery from the ashes of the Second World War, Japan soon emerged as an economic superpower. Until recently, it was the world’s second largest economy (1968 to 2010). The country has a well-educated, industrious workforce, and its affluent population makes it one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
The economic development of Japan and its position in the global markets has evoked different reactions over time. Much can be learned from Japan’s experience of industrialization, policy-interventions and the dynamism of entrepreneurs during the Meiji era. For many observers of the post-war era, distinctive Japanese management practices became another important factor in explaining the economic miracle. Japanese management was widely seen as a role model for the West, at least until the 1990s, when the same features were blamed for the “lost decade” and the protracted recovery.

—AIM—
The aim of this (introductory) lecture series is to provide a sound basic understanding of Japan’s economic features, as well as of the history of Japan’s economic development. The lecture will also examine distinctive features, such as management practices in the areas of human resources and production. The aim is to enable students to independently assess current developments in Japan, to recognize similarities between Japan’s experience and that of today’s emerging markets, and to gain insights that may be useful for working or doing business in Japan. The lecture series intends to stimulate interest so as to encourage self-study to further deepen knowledge.

—METHODS—
The lectures are planned to be held in-person and on-site, supported by materials on the e-learning platform moodle.
Currently, the lecture series is divided into three sessions (as announced on this page and the moodle platform).
The teaching language is English. Knowledge of German or Japanese is not required.
