Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Corona-Mode
Due to the unforeseeable nature of the Covid-19 pandemic and related restrictions, we will be unable to have regular sessions in our usual classrooms. This course will thus take place online. To participate, you need a stable internet connection, a computer with a webcam, speakers and a microphone (or a headset), and regular access to Moodle (will be granted to you automatically once you are registered for this course). Before registering for this class, make sure you meet all these requirements.
The workload will be the same as under “normal” conditions. You will have to read, you will have to provide written contributions/assignments, and you are expected to follow the lectures closely and regularly. These lectures will take place online and asynchronously (we will record the lectures and post them on Moodle). This has the advantage of being independent of the momentary quality of everybody’s internet connection and of the time zone participants are living in, and students can watch the lectures as often as they want.
In addition, we will have synchronous (live/real-time) consultation sessions via Moodle/BigBlueButton for Q&A, as well as an online forum on Moodle for written exchanges.

Contents
Vienna is home to a large number of governmental and non-governmental International Organizations (G-IOs and NG-IOs). Their work has a direct impact on the countries of East Asia. The goal of the course is to acquaint students with the work of some of these G-IOs and NG-IOs and to discuss their relevance for East Asia. We hope to facilitate contacts between our students and these organizations with a view to future cooperation in the form of internships or research. Said organizations include the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations Development Programme, the Organization of Petrol Exporting Countries, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (changes possible depending on availability).
We will invite experts from or on these IOs to give special lectures at the Department of East Asian Studies to allow for a deeper insight into the workings of these organizations and the issues they are dealing with.
Under regular circumstances, this course would include on-site visits. However, due to the yet unknown development of the Covid-19 situation this winter and the resulting restrictions, such visits will not be part of the regular program this time. We will, however, try to arrange some visits in February for interested students. As indicated before, it is not certain whether these visits will actually take place.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

A very good active knowledge of English is essential. Students are required to read various materials to prepare for their presentations and written assignments, and to participate in the various classes regularly and actively.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

(1) Students will be assigned to small teams and prepare a briefing report on one organization in preparation of the lectures. The framework for this briefing will be provided on Moodle.
(2) After the lectures, the relevant team will be asked to discuss the lectures according to a framework posted on Moodle. This will have to be done in written form, and will be posted in the forum on Moodle. We will also discuss the lectures during a real-time BBB session.
(3) Another team (to be assigned) will be asked to evaluate the quality of assignments 1 and 2. This evaluation will be done in written form through the Moodle forum.
The final grade will be calculated as the arithmetic average of the grades for the three assignments.
• Each of these three assignments constitutes a minimal requirement (“Mindestanforderung”) and must thus be passed in order to pass the whole course.
