Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Architecture and city planning are designed productions which, on the one hand facilitate human activities and embody the urban living culture, and, on the other hand manifest power of political and financial authorities. Throughout the complex and multi-phased histories of the Sinophone world, built objects and urban forms have often been forms of expression to narrate the past as well as the present. The aim of this seminar is to introduce students to the concept through an examination of the selected literature with topics revolving around the concept, with case studies of selected urban settings such as Hong Kong, Macau, Nanjing, Shanghai, Tainan and Taipei, to name but a few. We shall explore how, conceptually, urban heritage is used as methods by different authorities to narrate the past and define the present; practically, we shall scrutinise the selected academic literature (of textual materials which include images) to collect the tools such as reading, analysing and writing skills to develop academic research.
