Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Contents
This seminar is a key step in writing an MA or PhD thesis in East Asian Economy and Society (EcoS). In the interest of efficiency and effectiveness, it should be attended in the third or fourth semester of the MA program, or at the beginning of the PhD program.
You are expected to have a topic for your thesis in mind. It is also assumed that you have already written EcoS term papers.
The seminar leads you through all components of the theoretical part of your thesis. At the end of the seminar, you will have finished an advanced draft of the theoretical part of your EcoS MA thesis.
Please note that this course has been designed for advanced students of the EcoS MA and PhD programs. This course is not recommended for EcoS students in the first and second semester. It is not suitable for students of other programs, where other standards might ap-ply.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Workload and Assessment
There are four assignments. Details are available on Moodle.
• Assignment 1: Topic/title and research question.
• Assignment 2: Relevance of the research question.
• Assignment 3: Structure of the literature review.
• Assignment 4: Literature review and Analytical Framework.
Late submission: Late submission is not allowed for any of these assignments.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The final grade for the course will be calculated as follows:
• Assignment 1: 10%
• Assignment 2: 20%
• Assignment 3: 20%
• Assignment 4: 50%

Registration
You have registered via the electronic registration system of the University of Vienna. This registration, combined with participation in at least one session, is commensurate to a legally binding registration for examination. In other words, you will be graded. De-registration for this course will be possible according to the date set by the central teaching administration of the University of Vienna. If you decide to drop out of the course after that date, you will be graded nevertheless.
