IMPORTANT: This class will be held online for the whole summer term! Classes will be held either in Zoom or Blackboard Collaborate and there is a strict and mandatory camera-on policy in place. Participation without a camera is not possible.

Also, Chatham House rules apply throughout the course!

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In accordance with the Curriculum of East Asian Economy and Society (EcoS), after completion of this course,

• Students shall have a general understanding of the concept of law and legal philosophy as well as a basic knowledge of the legal history of East Asia
• They will be aware of the current specifics of the legal system of each country as well as the interaction of the legal system and the respective political reality
• Students will have the necessary theoretical skills to understand and interpret current developments in the field of law and politics from their own legal perspective

To achieve these aims the students will, in the first part of the course, learn about the general concepts of law and legal philosophy. Based on this overview, the legal history of the East Asian countries will be presented and discussed in class.

In the second part of the course, current issues regarding the law and the legal system of each country will be discussed. To further the understanding and to provide practical examples, current legal issues and affairs will be discussed in class. Students will choose an individual topic based on their own interest within the range of topics provided. After performing scientific research individually, the students will present their findings in class. These will be discussed in class.

• Participation in class, reading the mandatory materials
• Individual presentation, group presentation
• Feedback and participation in group discussions
• Final Exam (Essay Questions) or Take Home Examination (Essay Questions) The type of final examinations will depend on the relevant Covid-19 specific regulations of the University of Vienna at the time of examination

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Participation in class, reading the prepared materials and preparing for the individual lecture as well as participating in the final exam. Regular participation of students is therefore mandatory in this course.

The regular EcoS guidelines and rules on attendance apply.

Prüfungsstoff

Students are free to choose the topic of their presentation individually within the range of topics discussed in class (list of topics provided).
The essay questions in the final exam are based on the topics and materials presented in class.

Literatur

Required reading will be provided in Moodle.

Additional individual research for the group presentations.
