Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Hybrid Mode
This course will combine recorded lectures and units in presence.
You must, therefore, ensure that you have the necessary hardware, software, and stable internet access, AND you need to be able to physically participate in the discussion classes and other units taking place in presence. If, for whatever reason, you are not sure whether you can guarantee all this, then you should not register for this course.

Contents
This course provides insights into practical aspects of working in or with North Korea. To make the best out of this course, it is strongly recommended that you have already attended the course on “Politics, Economy and Society of North Korea” or otherwise acquired basic knowledge on the DPRK.
The course consists of interviews with individuals who have been working with North Korea in various capacities. These include a former student at Kim Il Sung University who was arrested and expelled, the representative of a German foundation supporting reforestation, a former CIA officer and State Department official, a former World Bank employee, the founder of a News Network, the founder of an NGO for capacity building, a former member of the European Parliament, members of NGOs providing food assistance, a medical doctor supporting the health system, the head of a travel agency, a filmmaker, an advisor to the South Korean president, and a lecturer at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology.
After having attended the course, students understand the practical challenges and opportunities of working in and with North Korea in various fields. They have learned about possible fields of engagement and are able to put these cases into a larger politico-economic context.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Workload
Students will be asked to watch a number of recorded interviews (details on Moodle). They will need to supplement these with their own research to fully grasp the work and background of the interviewees. Each student will have to take part in three multiple-choice tests.
This course includes several real time discussion sessions for Q&A in presence (details on Moodle).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Assessment
Grading for this course will be based on three multiple choice tests on the contents of the interviews.
Please note: This is not a lecture course (“Vorlesung”). Tests will thus not be repeated. They will also not be substituted by other contributions. Please make sure that you can participate. If you already know that this will not be possible, you should not register for this course. If you miss a test, for whatever reason, you will be graded “5” for that test. Please consider this when enrolling for this course.
The final grade for the course will be calculated based on the arithmetic average of the grades of three m/c tests.

Registration
You have registered via the electronic registration system of the University of Vienna. This registration, combined with participation in at least one session is commensurate to a legally binding registration for examination. In other words, you will be graded. Of course we understand that in the first weeks of the semester, plans can change. Thus, deregistration for this course will be possible until 18:00 on March 27, 2023. After that date, deregistration will not be accepted.
