Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course is a survey of Chinese art from the the Han dynasty (206 BCE- 220 CE) through the Song dynasty (960-1279).

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students are required to read the assigned readings, to participate in classroom discussions and to take part to the working groups' activity on the 'Virtual exhibition of Chinese art'. Regular class attendance is also part of the final evaluation.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The course aims to make students to become familiar with art and material culture of China during that span of Chinese history.

Prüfungsstoff

In the first part of the course introductory lectures will provide students with an overview on Chinese art and on research methodology. By reading and discussing critically the relevant scientific literature they will gain basic practice in the study of Chinese art. In the second part of the course students will be actively involved in the examination of major monuments and works of art: they will form working groups to set up a 'Virtual exhibition of Chinese art' by choosing a number of images of art objects and/or monuments to display with captions, analyzing their function and meaning within their social and historical context. The'Virtual exhibition' will be presented in class at the end of the course and will be evaluated for final grading.
