Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The seminar will start with an extensive introduction into the theory of Natural Morphology and its 3 subtheories: 1. cognitively based universal morphological preferences, 2. language typology, 3. language-specific system adequacy. Afterwards students will present oral reports on either 1) synchronic or diachronic morphological phenomena of English, German or other languages of their choice, incl. contrastive comparisons between languages, or 2) on so-called external or substantial evidence from language acquisition, language impairments, poetic neologisms, etc. Or 3) students of Cognitive Sciences are invited to study cognitive bases of linguistic preferences by looking into behavioural evidence, animal communication or other cognitive fields of interest. At the end of the semester or afterwards, these oral presentations are to be transformed into written reports which fit the requirements of the respective institutions where students come from.
