Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar will explore theoretical and empirical issues surrounding the syntax of relative clauses across several languages (primarily English and German). We will discuss the main types of relative clauses (namely: restrictive, appositive, free relative and correlative) and their analyses. Topics that we will pay special attention to include the copy theory of movement, internal versus external merge, matching effects, case syncretisms, and reconstruction effects. Concomitantly, we will look at some of the main studies in the processing literature on relative clauses, focusing in particular on subject vs. object processing asymmetries.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Students will have to make a presentation with a handout and write a BA paper. (Details will be discussed in class.)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Solide Kenntnisse des Phänomenbereichs, kritische Würdigung der wichtigsten theoretischen Arbeiten zum Thema.
