Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course analyzes musical sound, focusing on its cultural meanings and uses beyond its formal structures and representation in scores. It builds on the contributions of musicology, ethnomusicology, and anthropology of sound to the growing field of sound studies. We will study how sound works, how culture shapes our listening, how we identify some sounds and not others as “music,” and the importance of concepts such as “noise” and “silence” in such conceptualization. We will also engage with the associations between certain sounds and ideas about tradition, authenticity, modernity, race, or ethnicity and how composers, performers, and sound artists use the meanings attached to those sounds in their creative endeavors. Based in current theoretical developments in sound studies, students will include assignments which may include soundwalks, sound ethnographies, and sound installations.
