Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course will deal with the history of political and social unrest, the anti-colonial struggle, the pro-British unionist violence and workers struggle on the island of Ireland from the United Irishman Rising in 1798 until the 21st Century. The seminar will be held in the English language. Oral and written contributions by students can be in German or English. The willingness to read texts in English is a pre-condition for entrance to the course. Following 3-4 introductory talks by the lecturers the students will give oral presentations.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Final marks will be awarded on the basis of attendance, the willingness to join in discussions (including exercises), the quality of the oral presentation and the written work according to the key: 10/20/30/40%.

If a student cannot attend, he/she should inform one of the lecturers as far in advance as possible and by means of e-mail. The written paper must be at least 10 pages long (excluding title page and bibliography), be paginated and written at one and half spacing and with footnotes on each page. The written papers need to focus around a specific research interest. Written papers should be sent as an email attachment to dieter.andreas.reinisch@univie.ac.at

A list of topics for the oral and written presentation will be available in first session on March 11. Any suggestions from students for topics discussing aspects of political and social violence in Ireland since 1800 are welcome!

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students will be expected to research their topic, practise presentation techniques and to complete their written assignment. It is strongly recommended that students consult their lecturers about the progress of their written paper by email to: dieter.andreas.reinisch@univie.ac.at

Prüfungsstoff

The lecturers will use images and film in the introductory sessions. One or two small exercises are possible during the months of March and April (each one page). Students are expected to speak slowly and distinctly during their presentation and regard the course also as an opportunity to debate topics under examination.
