Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will topicalise Discourses related to Histories of Displacement where individuals articulate their experiences of alienation, exclusion and often also trauma that arises from various forms of systemic and structural violence. Such structural violence refers to ways in which powerful institutions limit the life chances of individuals who in one way or another do not fit a set of norms provided by the institution without consultation with those affected. Examples of discourses within recent South African history will refer to three kinds of experiences, namely those dealt with (i) in hearings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), (ii) in providing care to HIV/AIDs patients and (iii) in the 2007 Xenophobic attacks on foreign migrants. Considering how displacement is experienced and articulated, the topic will be approached within the following framework:
o Patterns of migration and policies that respond to refugees, migrants and new immigrants
o Institutional provision for multilingualism: language planning and policy in Africa
o Approaches to analysing Discourses of Displacement
o Structural violence and its mainfestation in discourses
o Public discourses on human rights violations: coming to terms with a disrupted past
o Silencing and voicelessness of marginalised groups with experiences of trauma
o Relating poverty to xenophobia: discourses of alienation as precursors to violence
