Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This is a seminar for students interested into current research of individual differences in aptitude/ability of second / multiple language acquisition and language learning in more informal or non-formal settings. The seminar will concentrate on aspects of language aptitude from an interdisciplinary perspective (classical SLA concepts, aptitude testing, psychology of language learning, psycholinguistics, cognitive neuroscience), and on more general issues in foreign language learning, backed up by practical insights into this topic by own research projects of the students on topics of their own choice.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
field work (including testing participants and statistical analysis of data), project presentations, all-class discussions of project presentations, group discussions, final paper, final exam, (active participation during class is assessed as well).
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Mindestanforderungen: since this is a "prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung", permanent active participation is required (missing classes restricted to max 2 classes, equaling 180 minutes); In this case of a blocked seminar, missing will be strictly handled and should be avoided.
This course aims at introducing the participants to the subfield of SLA-research aptitude and individual differences (ID) research with special focus on polyglotism and field research, providing practical background information and insights into the nature of research on language aptitude/learning as well as familiarizing with recent and ongoing research in the field and the tools used (testing, statistics). A further aim of this course is to sensitize participants towards the importance of individual differences in language learning for the teaching of foreign languages and the implications for language teaching and language education, especially in non-formal settings. The course should be highly interactive with students elaborating own topics and reporting/discussing them in class and forming interest-groups.
