Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

"Language Learning in "Corona" times: is it all online?"

This research course originates from an earlier course last winter semester with the topic "Language Cafes" (non-formal language learning methods). However, since the outbreak of Covid19, urging most public places (like cafes) to close their doors, such a person-centered socially interactive research seminar is now no longer possible. Therefore, we will investigate how "Corona" affected this socially interactive language learning landscape, how and whether it shifted to online interaction platforms, and investigate online language learning in general.
The course participants will, ideally in small groups, use a mixed methods approach (qualitative + quantitative methods (statistics) via online questionnaires and interviews).
The course is suited for students interested into research of non-formal language teaching and learning, multilingualism or psychology of language learning. The course is highly explorative, because this is an under-investigated, potentially new research field. It should render the course participants sensitive towards new methodological paradigms and try exploring new methods or the ones already acquired in the course of their previous studies.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Written paper and 2 oral presentations (single or as part of group).
(40% talks, 40% paper, 20% discussion participation)
The course should be highly interactive and practical with students elaborating their own group projects (presentation of a preferred topic chosen from this field (i.e. the topic of the seminar). This will be chosen during the first 14 days of course after brain storming period in the first session, thus fixed in the second session. Additionally students can bring in own material and ideas presented in a first series of “brainstorm” mini presentations. Students should discuss their findings and thoughts in class and produce a joint presentation of their findings and research results and write a dossier (final group paper) about the chosen research topic of the seminar.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Active participation in blocked classes (max. one block missing! =180min max missing time), online field research, presentation of field research in class (or in online meetings), application of explorative qualitative and/or quantitative methods, round table discussions, active contribution of own ideas, final proseminar individual paper which is contributing to and part of the group dossier (app. 20-25 pages, 6.000 words).

Corona note: we hope to be able to meet in class in person (with masks and distant seating) as this is the "ideal" setting at least at the beginning of the semester. If not, it is possible, that we have some blocks online meetings.
