Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The proseminar aims at building a critical knowledge of the history of the ancient Greek language. We will discuss key aspects of the Indo-European background of Greek; the historical circumstances of our earliest sources for the Greek language, especially poetry, and how they affect linguistic study; select problems of contemporary research. Students will be expected to do some reading ahead of the sessions (normally 20 to 40 pages).
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Depending on the overall number of participants, each student will give one or two short oral presentations either on a text or on a specific problem. This is in addition to the final written examination consisting of a historico-linguistic commentary of an unseen text. Aids to be used will vary depending on the student's background knowledge of Greek.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
60% of the maximum mark is enough for a positive assessment. The oral presentations must show critical thinking. The fostering of a collegial atmosphere in the seminar is encouraged and valued. The final assessment will take into account the background knowledge at the beginning of the Proseminar.
