Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course aims to teach students the main principles underlying experimental research. Students will learn how to develop a research idea and how to design and conduct simple experiments that would allow them to test the predictions of different theories and models of language, acquisition, representation and processing. We will cover different types of offline and online experimental methods applicable to a variety of research topics from different areas of psycholinguistics, including research at different levels of linguistic representation (semantic, lexical, syntactic) and modality (production and perception). Students will also be introduced to research practices (ethics) and basic statistics for data analysis.
The course content will be delivered through lectures and course assessment will be based on students devising their own experiment, considering the main aspects discussed during the course.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The following criteria and marking weights will be used for assessments:
1. Research report (~ 3000 words). Students will be required to work in groups of 3-4 people, select a research question and design, run and report the results of a mini-experiment. Each student will have to write an individual research report (in English) of the work done by the group (50%)
2. Active participation in class (20%)
3. In class presentation of the groups’ project in one of the seminar sessions (30%)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

No prior background in psycholinguistics is assumed. Solid knowledge of English is necessary.

Research report ((50%)
