Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course will introduce classic and recent theoretical approaches to first language acquisition and will also cover empirical findings in different areas of language development. After discussing nativist and constructivist approaches, and theoretical issues like the logical problem of language acquisition, the continuity assumption, poverty of the stimulus and domain-specificity of acquisition mechanisms, we will focus on language acquisition at different levels, reviewing findings and models of phonological, lexical, morphological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic development. The typical course of language acquisition can be disrupted in several ways and by impairments of different background mechanisms. In the second part of the course, emphasis will be placed on atypical language development, focussing on developmental disorders of language. Linguistic and cognitive profiles of Specific language impairment, dyslexia, hearing impairment, autism, ADHD and Down syndrome are going to be discussed and compared, seeking answers to the following questions: Is language impairment similar across different developmental disorders of language? How is the impairment of language functions related to impairment of other cognitive functions? What are the basic learning mechanisms that are impaired in language disorders?
