Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This class will focus on information structure and Romance Languages. The term "information structure" goes back to Halliday (1967) and has been used since then to refer to the partition of the sentences into categories like focus, background, topic, comment, etc. Romance languages are interesting from this point of view for several reasons, the most widely discussed one being the observation that information-structure categories such topic and focus play a fundamental role in the word order of the sentences in these languages.
We will read articles that explore several aspects of information structure in the different romance languages - focussing on Italian, French, Portuguese and Catalan.
No previous knowledge on any Romance language is required (but might be useful...)

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

First half of the class: students will have weekly homework assignments related to the reading for each class.
Second half: oral presentations of one text pre-selected by the teacher and the student (a list will be provided on the first day of class).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Participation in class is extremely important, and will count as half of your grade - together with the homework assignment. Basically, it is crucial for the good ongoing of this class that the students read the selected texts and come to class ready to discuss them.
Second half of your grade will be based on your oral presentation. You'll also have to provide a handout for the presentation.

Prüfungsstoff

There will be no exam nor term paper.
Participation in class, homework and oral presentation will compose your final examination.
