Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This module will serve as an introductory course to classical Chinese, focusing on the basics of grammar, phonology, and script. Students will engage with foundational texts from the 6th to 2nd centuries BCE. The course will offer the choice between a more strongly linguistically oriented and a more practically reading-oriented pathway. The former will foreground linguistic structures, the latter will necessarily devote more attention to the writing system.

Course objectives:
➢ Provide students with a basic understanding of classical Chinese grammar, phonology, and script
➢ Introduce foundational texts from the classical period for linguistic and contextual analysis
Expected outcomes:
➢ Learn to analyse and translate texts from the classical Chinese corpus based on their grammatical structures
➢ Gain familiarity with reading and writing a selection of non-simplified characters
➢ Acquire basic skills in Old Chinese phonological reconstruction
➢ Be able to analyse classical Chinese texts within their historical and cultural contexts
Pre-requirements:
➢ No prior knowledge of classical Chinese is required for Module 1
