Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

SEMANTIC THEORIES OF TENSE
Earlier this year, the Universities of Graz, Vienna and Salzburg jointly won a grant to fund nine research projects in theoretical linguistics for four years. The topic of this whole 'Spezialforschungsbereich' is 'Redundancy and Deficiency', and its main focus are pronouns. In this class I will introduce my project on tense (there are many pronominal theories of tense) by way of a more general introduction to tense semantics, followed by a presentation of the research foci of the project.
The seminar will be quite hands-on. In the first part, participants need to do reading and some homeworks for comprehension/practice. In the second half, you will choose an original topic in temporal semantics to do some (empirical and/or theoretical) work on.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance, active participation (20%), discussion lead (30%), final essay (50%)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Regular attendance and active participation in class, leading a discussion and submission of final paper is required.
Presentations and final paper will be marked according to pre-published marking criteria to be made available on Moodle.
Overall, 50% of success in each component merits a pass grade.
