Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This proseminar will deal with selected topics in syntax, starting from argument expression and realisation (and more generally A-dependencies) to A-bar dependencies (wh-constructions), and things in between (e.g. reconstruction, clitic dependencies, Person-features left and right). The guiding theoretical framework will be that of the Special Research Area 'Language between Redundancy and Deficiency' (https://sfb-redundancy-deficiency.uni-graz.at/en/), whereby Redundancy (R) and Deficiency (D) are defined as follows:
R: the output of an operation is insensitive to some feature specified in the input.
D: an operation that presupposes a certain feature applies to a grammatical entity that lacks it.
Further, we will see how R&D interplay to give rise to parameters that underlie cross-linguistic variation.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Regular attendance, active participation, discussion lead (presentation with handout), final written exam on the last session of the course.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Regular attendance and active participation in class, leading a discussion (presentation with handout) and final written exam.
Overall, 50% of success in each component merits a pass grade.
