160362 VO VO: Canadian Fiction in a Multicultural State (2007W)

While Canada has always been a multicultural country, it did not adopt policies to that end until 1988. This course proposes a discussion that will begin with the examination of such notable analyses as that of Charles Taylor. It will then examine the literature of three multicultural groups, that is, African Canadian, Japanese Canadian, and Aboriginal writing (which will be included despite the fact that it does fall within the scope of the Multiculturism Act). Part of the purpose of the course will be to indicate that multiculturalism in Canada is still a subject of debate.

Bien que le Canada ait toujours été un pays multiculturel, il l'est devenu officiellement en 1988. Le but du cours est d'examiner dans un premier temps quelques textes significatifs, telle l'analyse de Charles Taylor. Dans un deuxieme temps, on va examiner la littérature de trois groupes distincts, c'est-à-dire, celle de "l'africadienne", canadienne japonaise et autochtone (inclue en dépit du fait qu'elle nest pas incluse dans La Loi sur le multiculturalisme). Un but secondaire du cours sera de montrer que le problème de multiculturalisme au Canada demeure toujours un sujet de discussion.
