Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Is trauma always or only the exceptional event? What does it mean to bear witness to an event that you in some way never even experienced? Through close analysis of selected psychoanalytic texts (such as Freud, Klein, Fanon) alongside selected cultural texts (including theatre, film, monuments), we will ask into the social context of loss and the ethical urgency of attending to it. Units of the course will focus on such questions as how to narrate history in the wake of catastrophe, "wounded attachments", the relationship between trauma and the everyday, reparation and the politics of memory.
Throughout this course we will give special attention to the question of the "live": live performances, living bodies of witness, psychic remainders.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Analyze how different discourses and disciplines define and attempt to "solve" the problem of trauma; demonstrate how the vocabulary and insights of psychoanalysis can be harnessed to cultural analysis and, even, cultural politics; develop students' skills in close reading and open-ended critical engagement.

Prüfungsstoff

Students are expected to: attend every meeting of the seminar; participate in seminar discussions; write 6 short (roughly 2-page) weekly reflection papers on the assigned readings/topics, which are to be handed in at the beginning of class (these papers are mandatory but ungraded); and make one in-class presentation. Please note that the seminar will be conducted in English.

Literatur

Assigned readings will be drawn from psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic studies (Sigmund Freud, Melanie Klein, Frantz Fanon), trauma studies (Cathy Caruth, Shoshana Felman), queer revisions of trauma theory (Ann Cvetkovich), new work on the politics of mourning (David Eng and David Kazanjian, Judith Butler), performance studies approaches to trauma and witness (Diana Taylor, Peggy Phelan), and dramatic literature (Vogel).
Ordinarily, weekly readings will not exceed 40 pages and will be made available as pdf files.
