Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar will consider first some of the moral problems raised by global climate change, such as justice towards climate refugees, future generations, non-human sentient species, and questions about individual obligations. Then it will discuss the so-called motivational gap, i.e., the gap between our full awareness of the potentially catastrophic effects of climate change and our lack of proper reaction to it, as well as the psychological mechanisms humans develop to live with the latter.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Regular attendance and active participation in discussion (15%), seminar presentation (25%), and a term paper on a topic chosen in consultation with the instructor (60%). Detailed instructions for writing your paper will be given in the seminar.

All these evaluation components are required for successfully completing this course. Only one unexcused absence is permitted.

Grading scale:
100-90 pts -- very good
89-80 pts -- good
79-66 pts -- satisfactory
65-51 pts -- sufficient
50-0 pts -- insufficient
