Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course focuses on the ethics of blame. Blame is a central topic in normative ethics, and plays an essential role in our moral responsibility practices. In this course, we focus on various aspects of the ethics of blame. We will focus on different theories about the role and nature of blame (e.g., Strawson, Wallace, Shoemaker, Scanlon, Smith, Sher, Hieronymi, Fricker, etc.). We will further investigate topics such as epistemic blame, the standing to blame, and hypocritical blame.

By the end of this course, the student should be able to:
- Explain the central role blame plays in theories of moral responsibility
- Explain the differences between cognitive, emotional, conative, and functional theories of blame.
- Have insight into the various conditions under which blame and expressions of blame are fitting.

Final Paper: 60%
Outline for final paper: 20%
Reflection: 20%
Active Participation/Reading questions: No grade, but mandatory.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

On each assignment, students will receive points. The grades are distributed as follows:
1: 87-100 points
2: 75-86 points
3: 63-74 points
4: 50-62 points
5: 0-49 points

Prüfungsstoff

The final paper must be based on the literature on blame we read in class.

Literatur

To be announced in the first class. The course will concentrate on the contemporary debate on blame (Wallace, Shoemaker, Scanlon, Smith, Sher, Hieronymi, Fricker, etc.)
