Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Is an emotion the sort of thing that can be rational? If you don't care about this question, you don't care about understanding yourself or about living a moral life.

Emotion, the old men say, gets in the way of rational judgement. Love, hatred, jealousy, they all do it. But if emotions are as irrational as the old men say, we are in trouble, because we - the rational animals - are partly made up of emotions. Moreover, our moral lives depend on emotions: my anger at you is a negative moral evaluation - you are blameworthy for having wronged me. So if emotions are irrational, some of our most important moral evaluations are also irrational. This course explores these issues through Ronald de Sousa's classic The Rationality of Emotion.
